Review

The HTC Touch HD is a striking looking windows mobile operating system based mobile. The first thing that you’ll notice is the  huge 3.8 inch WVGA display (480×800 pixels) which hints at the advanced multimedia capabilities.

The operating system is Windows mobile professional which is the latest incarnation of this ever growing platform and we regard this as more stable and smoother than Symbian’s offering. This means email exchange support as well as Windows office document editing is possible.

Basically this is an upgraded version of HTC Touch Diamond and is a sleek futuristic looking mobile which you certainly wouldn’t be embarrassed at showing it to friends. HTC have long made business orientated mobiles that weren’t always the most fashionable but this is a whole new level, the design of this mobile is quite beautiful the feel and look of the mobile is absolute class. Not too heavy and not light, it’s really does have a solid feel about it.

Now onto the impressive WVGA touch screen. It’s a massive 3.8 inches with a high resolution on 480 x 800 which is only matched at this time by the Sony Ericsson Xperia, this equates to 2.5 times as many pixels as the iPhone 3G. Impressive. This touch sensitive screen utilises HTC’s TouchFLO 3D system which is a good attempt at making this Windows based handset a lot more user friendly and in all honestly it works well though it’s not as deeply involved throughout the mobile as we would like, meaning you do have to resort to using the included stylus at times. This can be a bit trying at times meaning two hands are needed, one to hold the mobile, one to use the stylus. Saying that the screen is still one of the best we have seen and the build in accelerometer means flipping videos to watch in widescreen is stunning, videos look excellent. It’s worth noting the TouchFLO system ran faster than anticipated and appears smoother compared to its predecessor.

A 5MP camera is also part of the package, though pixel numbers aren’t everything and it’s fair to say this isn’t the best camera around but is more than adequate when using the inbuilt autofocus. This camera excels in good lighting but suffers in darker environments as there is no flash. A front facing camera is also included for making video calls. There is no lens cover with the camera being a slight raised bump on the smooth back.

Wifi and HSDPA support means ultra fast connection speeds and the high resolutions make web browsing a joy, many website shown in full resolutions due to the 800 pixel support, no zooming or resizing needed though this easily  can be achieved by sliding and tapping the screen. Web browsing with Opera on this mobile is simply excellent and at the time of writing is our best browsing experience on a mobile ever.

GPS support as well as Google maps makes navigation impressive on the large screen. Windows mobile media’s various code support means media and audio options are good, supporting all the main formats. A 3.5mm headphone socket and FM radio is also included, it’s obvious HTC have thought about what people want. Other nice inclusions are Bluetooth and the MicroSD slot which provides support up to a whopping 32GB.

The Touch HD weighs in at 147g with battery and the dimensions are 115 mm x 62.8 mm x 12 mm. This is on the larger side but so are the features.

Battery life is quoted at 420 minutes talk time with 3G turned on and 680 hours on standby. Though we’d think real world use would vary from this. Expect around a day’s worth of use when using GPS and the HSDPA before recharging.

At present this mobile is about as fully featured as you can get and in our opinion is a fantastic all round smart phone. The question is would I have one over the iPhone? Probably but it’s really swings and roundabouts as to what function you need out of a mobile. It’s a striking looking fabulous fully featured mobile, only let down by the occasional use of a stylus and the sometimes clumsy use of the Windows operating system.  People may not like the larger look of the mobile but it does have a huge screen which is a joy to view.

Overall this mobile is all around quality and is without doubt the best windows mobile phone yet.  We highly anticipate the release of an HTC mobile utilizing the new Google android.
